About us

Katmandu Journal is Nepal’s premier independent newsroom for clear thinking and bold reporting. We go beyond headlines to uncover the deeper forces shaping the country’s politics, economy, environment and society: with the depth and editorial standards found in the world’s finest publications.

Founded by Karan Poudel, Katmandu Journal exists to fill a growing gap in the media industry. We treat readers as thinkers and not consumers. Our stories are global in perspectives but rooted in local realities.

Whereas much of Nepali media chases the immediate or panders to power, Katmandu Journal takes the long view. We favour context over clickbait and consequences over noise. Our newsroom doesn’t rely on press releases or political patronage.

We believe journalism should do more than break news. It should build understanding. Our stories help you act more confidently and see Nepal—and the world around it—with new eyes.

This is journalism for the serious reader. This is Katmandu Journal.

A variety of relevant topics covered with good analysis and written in excellent English.
